By Pastor Sam Jones:
The past couple of weeks has been a whirlwind for those who are pro-life.
On January 20th we had Sanctity of Life Sunday where thousands of pulpits rose to proclaim that God recognizes life from conception (Psalm 139:13) and that He hates the shedding of innocent blood (Proverbs 6:16-17); but where God works so does Satan.
Satan brought his retaliation in full force on January 22nd,, the 46th anniversary of his favorite court opinion (Roe v. Wade), with the legalization of abortion up to birth in New York and in my home state a judge struck down the Heartbeat bill as unconstitutional. Following all of this, there have been a couple of notable moves that have been made as a counter to Satan’s onslaught.
First, Senator Jake Chapman has proposed to amend the Iowa Constitution to include a section that says, “No right to abortion or required funding of abortion. The Constitution of the State of Iowa does not secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion.” Secondly, Representative Dean Fisher filed a bill (HF 153) that would provide a monument for children who have been murdered in the womb. With all of this news it really has me thinking on what each person can do to fight for the rights of the unborn and what we can do to help abolish abortion.
I believe it is vital to start first with pastors and what they can do in the fight for life. It is important to start with pastors because they are to be preachers of righteousness and no doubt preaching against murder and for life is righteous.
Generally, Christians will reflect what they have been fed from the pulpit, so it is vital that pastors today speak boldly from the pulpit on the issue of life. It is not enough to preach once a year on the issue of life. The pulpit needs to be a constant gong that is sounding out the righteousness of life until we can abolish abortion. In today’s day and age God hasn’t just given pastors a conventional pulpit, He has also given pastors a digital pulpit and medium from which to proclaim righteousness. Pastors need to be standing up for life on their social media accounts. Pastor, God wants you to fight for the life of the unborn much more than He wants to see what you ate for lunch on Facebook.
Pastors must also lead by example and that means they must be willing to hit the streets fighting for the life of each baby in the womb. This means a pastor should be willing to hold a sign in front of Planned Parenthood, a pastor should be willing to consider planting a church at a Planned Parenthood, and should be willing to visit the state house to fight for the most innocent of the earth.
The next group of people that it is vital to call to action are the Christians. The Christians should be consistently called to action from the pulpit and life of their pastor. If Christians as a group of people were to stand up for the lives of the unborn, it will really cause change.
Christians you need to follow your pastor’s lead in proclaiming righteousness from the platforms you have been given (family, friends, social media, etc.). You must also be willing to take to the street to abolition abortion, you must be willing to pray in front of Planned Parenthood, perhaps hold a sign in front of Planned Parenthood, and be willing to plant a church at Planned Parenthood.
Christian you also have the greatest call to action in the fight for life, that is voting for representatives who are willing to truly be pro-life. If your representative is unwilling to introduce or support personhood legislation and is unwilling to fight for the rights of the unborn, you shouldn’t be voting for that representative. It is vital that you are an informed voter who votes in an honest way. If you are convicted to be pro-life, and you vote for someone who is not pro-life, you are actually lying in the voting booth. In the voting booth we are putting forward those who are representing us, our convictions, and of course God’s morality. Let us be honest citizens and vote for those who will stand for our convictions.
Lastly, I want to call legislators to action. Since we have a government that is of the people, by the people, and for the people this is vitally important. Our legislators are those who make laws in our land and if they are willing to exercise the power that has been given to them by people through the constitution, they can make the lawful difference in our state and nation concerning the abolition of abortion. I first call our legislators to action by ignoring the oligarchy that our judicial branch has become. We need representatives with backbone who will stand up to these appointed tyrants who pervert the laws of our land. When John Quincy Adams was in the House of Representatives he was known as “The Hellhound of Abolition”. Year after year he would bring up legislation that would remove the gag order on slavery and would be voted down. When asked why he did this his response was, “Duty is ours, results are God’s “.
We have many representatives and senators who are willing to say they are pro-life (many have emailed me and have tried to reassure me they are pro-life), yet why do we not have a flood of proposed bills fighting for life? It is because we have too many legislators that are focused on God’s part instead of being focused on their part. We need legislators who are willing to be “Hellhounds of Abolition” concerning abortion. We need our legislators to want to have their hands clean of innocent blood more than bloody hands filled with GOP dollars. Take heart if you stand for the unborn, not only will this pastor stand with you, God will stand with you as you do your reasonable service.
Exodus 2 gives account of the Egyptian midwives who took action and stood against an evil government to save the lives of children, verses 20 and 21 tell the result: “Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them.” The lesson we must learn is that God blesses those who take action in the fight for life. To take action in the fight for life always starts with fearing God. If you are a pastor, a Christian, or a pro-life legislator the question is do you fear God or do you fear man?
